Walk the Walk
– Information Sheet
Outdoor Chattanooga and Hamilton County’s
Step One Program have teamed up to present an event on the
Tennessee Riverwalk that promotes the benefits of regular exercise
as a key part of a healthy lifestyle.
The event will begin on May 21st and
runs through May 28th. The focus of the event will be to
encourage participants to walk the Riverwalk and begin the process
of incorporating regular exercise into daily routine. Though
walking is our primary focus, we are encouraging participants to
experience the Riverwalk in any way they prefer – walking,
cycling, running, roller blading, etc. We hope to highlight the fun
aspect of regular exercise and encourage anyone participating to
continue using the Riverwalk long after our event concludes.
Our kick-off day will coincide with the Bicycle
Task Forces’ Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 21st. We
will encourage participants to walk the Riverwalk or get involved
in a Family Ride Day.
Sunday, May 22nd – Field Day
– kid’s obstacle courses, relay races, “Amazing
Race”, prize for child who walks farthest on that day.
Monday, May 23rd – Stroller Day
– in addition to regular participants, we will be encouraging
moms to bring their kids to the Riverwalk and begin the lifelong
lesson of showing kids how important exercise is as a part of
anyone’s regular routine.
Tuesday, May 24th-Rise and Shine
– encourage participants to come out early and walk the
Riverwalk before work. Will also provide a healthy breakfast to the
first 100 participants.
Wednesday, May 25th –Senior
Day– for regular participants and seniors. Wheelchairs
welcome! We want seniors to realize that even incremental changes
in exercise routines can have positive results.
Thursday, May 26th – Employee
Lunch Day – encourage all downtown businesses to promote this
event by giving employees 30 extra minutes for walking at
lunch.
Friday, May 27th – Moonlight
Walk – encourage romance and exercise on the Riverwalk.
Saturday, May 28th – Adventure
Day Finale at Coolidge Park – sea kayaking demonstrations,
possible celebrity appearance, prizes, t-shirts, recognition of
those who walked most, etc.
Our goal is to promote regular exercise and we
are excited about the opportunities available for doing this at the
Riverwalk. We look forward to working closely with our sponsors to
encourage participation and to educate participants about the
benefits and ease of walking as part of a daily exercise
routine.
