On November
7th, Tommie F. Brown Academy for Classical Studies
School will be holding their first Walk to School Day. Principal
Lea Ann Burk has been working with Ms. Taylor on the new
Chattanooga-Hamilton County Safe Routes to School Program for the
last several months to identify ways to encourage and improve the
conditions for students to walk and bike to school. Various
election candidates may make guest appearances to cheer on the
walkers.
Students,
parents, and teachers are invited to attend. Goodies, thanks to AAA
Auto Club South, will be given away to participating students and
three students will be lucky winners of the new Land’s End
Cool Blue Backpack, thanks to the folks at the I Walk International
organization www.walktoschool.org
. The backpacks sport reflective material, flashing
blue lights, and a variety of pockets including CD
holders.
Walk to School
Day is being sponsored by the Chattanooga- Hamilton County Regional
Planning Agency and is supported by Activate Chattanooga and
Outdoor Chattanooga. Safe Routes to Schools is an
international movement that aims to make everyday walk and bike to
school day. More children walking and biking means better health
benefits for them and the environment, and reduced traffic
congestion for everyone.
